MySpace Could Kill YourRadio
A new partnership between Cingular Wireless and MySpace will put mobile recording studios in the hands of anyone carrying a cellphone. The connection to MySpace will create thousands of virtual concert venues.

The program is currently in beta with 75 unsigned MySpace bands. Each will be guided through an online process of licensing their materials, uploading audio samples to ensure its originality, and then production of 30-second clips that will be available as downloadable ringtones for other Cingular users.

While the Radio and Recording industry rolls it collective zombie-eyes skyward, the rest of know just how small the steps are from downloadable ringtone to downloadable single to cellular symphonies.

RadioNeedsToListen.com
Cute stunt from Clear Channel as they decide on a new format to replace Detroit's Classic Rock "Alice." Launching the domain "1067NeedsHelp.com" they appear to open themselves up to receiving feedback from the listeners who will have to endure whatever new format is selected.

Asking each site visitor to submit their top five songs -- and boasting that they will become part of "Detroit radio history" -- CC says they are putting the future of the radio station in the hands of the public.

This could be a good idea, IF the powers that be would actually pay attention to (and act upon) the feedback they receive. Unfortunately, rumor has already escaped that the station format has already been decided -- Country.

This chance to become part of radio history has rapidly turned into a promotional swindle.

HD Radio's New Savior...
Radio Shack???
InsideRadio reports that Radio Shack will begin by carrying the $300 Boston Acoustics model, but will offer its own HD units as early as September.

Not Circuit City.
Not BestBuy.
Radio Shack.

They just CLOSED the Radio Shack store down the street from me -- who says they'll even be AROUND in September?

Boom-Boom: Out Go the Lights
...and if the lights are out, there's DEFINITELY nobody home.
Clear Channel's Mark Mays: "Once you get the HD Radio price point below $100 - Boom."
Mays says he expects to see a $99 HD receiver on the market "in 12 to 18 months." Current pricing is around 300 bucks.

Boom? I have no doubt the HD receiver price will drop.
As a matter of fact, that "Boom" sound is probably the noise it will make when the price drops so fast it breaks the sound barrier! I predict that at some point they will be GIVING them away.

People still aren't going to buy (let along buy INTO) HD radio unless there is some sort of compelling reason to tune into QUALITY programming CONTENT they can get nowhere else, and apply some sort of personal CONTROL over when/where they choose to listen.

People dialing into to most radio stations because the product sucks. Sucking in High Definition is still SUCKING -- now you'll just suck on more channels and with clearer clarity of sound. Television didn't get better because Cable added a bazillion channel choices -- there are still very few good shows on tv.

Radio needs quality. Radio needs creative.
Radio doesn't need HD -- they need to NS (Not Suck.)
